The Drunk Man She Called the Cops On Turned Out to Be Her Dad

 



Nina Reyes had lived in the same house on Caldwell Street for six years, and in six years, nothing had ever happened on her porch that required a phone call to the police.

So when she stepped out at 6:40 on a Wednesday morning to retrieve her recycling bin and found a man asleep against her front door — back against the wood, chin on his chest, one arm around an empty bottle of something brown — she did the thing that felt most rational. She went back inside, locked the door, and dialed 911.

She watched from the window while she waited. The man didn't move. His clothes were the color of something that had once been cleaner. His hair was long, matted at one side where it had pressed against the doorframe. He was not young. Sixty, maybe — or fifty and worn down to sixty. His breathing was visible even through the glass: slow and even and entirely unconcerned with the trouble it was causing.

The patrol car arrived in eleven minutes. Officer Dana Berroa was the one who got out, a compact woman with a calm face, and she walked up the porch steps without hurrying and crouched down in front of the sleeping man.

Nina opened her front door and stood in the frame with her arms crossed.

"Is he a danger?" she asked.

"Doesn't look like it," Berroa said. She was studying his face with the careful attention of someone looking for something specific. "Do you know him?"

"No," Nina said. "Never seen him."

Berroa reached for her flashlight and clicked it on, angling it gently across the man's face.

The man stirred. His eyes opened — brown, slow to focus, moving through confusion before they landed on the officer crouching in front of him. He didn't speak.

Nina was about to go back inside to get her bag — she was going to be late for work — when something made her look again.

It was the hands. His hands were resting open in his lap, palms up, the way you sleep when you're not afraid of being caught at anything. The left hand had a scar along the base of the thumb, pale and slightly raised, shaped like a crescent moon.

Her father had a scar exactly like that. He'd gotten it opening a can when Nina was four, and she had cried harder than he had, and afterward he'd let her put the bandage on and she'd used six of them because she wanted to be sure.

She hadn't spoken to her father in nine years. She had his number saved in her phone under a name that wasn't his. She had exactly one photo of him, face-down in a shoebox under her bed, and she had never looked at it but she had also never thrown it away.

"Wait," Nina said.

Berroa looked up.

Nina came down the porch steps. She came close enough to see his face in the flashlight — the jaw she recognized, the line of his nose, the ears that stuck out at the same slight angle hers did. He was looking at her now, still slow, still confused.

"Nina," he said. Just that. Just her name, in a voice that was rougher than she remembered but shaped the same way around the syllables.

She sat down on the porch step.

Not next to him. Two steps up, at a distance that said: I see you, but I have not yet decided. She sat and she looked at her hands and then she looked at him.

"How did you find this address?" she asked.

"Your cousin Marlena," he said. "I asked her not to tell you I was coming." He paused. "I didn't make it to the door."

"I can see that."

Officer Berroa had taken a few steps back, not far, doing the quiet professional thing of being present without listening. Nina appreciated that more than she could have said.

"Are you sick?" Nina asked.

Her father looked at his hands. The crescent scar. "Yes," he said.

The word sat on the porch between them like something that had been traveling a long way and was finally done moving.

Nina did not say I'm sorry. She did not say you should have called. She did not say any of the things she had rehearsed in the abstract, over years, for a conversation she'd been certain would never happen.

She said: "There's a couch."


He stayed for eleven days before the hospital admission. He stayed for six weeks after he was discharged. He was not easy to have in the house — he was stubborn about the television remote and he couldn't sleep past 5 a.m. and he cried once, in the kitchen, quietly, with his back turned, and Nina pretended she hadn't heard.

On the last morning, when the cab came to take him to the halfway house the social worker had arranged, he stood on the porch — her porch, the same doorframe — and looked at her with the specific expression of a man who knows he is not owed anything.

"Thank you," he said.

Nina thought about the photo in the shoebox. She thought about the bandages she'd stacked on a crescent scar when she was four years old.

"Don't make me call the cops again," she said.

He almost smiled. She almost did too.

The cab pulled away. She went inside and found the shoebox and took out the photo and put it on her nightstand, face up.
